![]() Complete the task and you are one step closer to launching your space ship. These are like separate mini pinball tables where you have a specific task to complete in a limited time. There are also sub-boards accessed through certain bonuses. Personally, I jumped right in and played quite a few games before taking the Grand Tour. You can also take the Grand Tour and learn about all the scoring options without having to figure them out on the fly. Then, when you trigger a bonus, you are told what is needed to rack up the points. When you begin each board you are instructed on how to activate the bonuses. There is interactive help designed into the game too. Complete the space port and launch your ship to join the rank of pinball wizards, but be warned this is nearly an impossible task (I haven't completed it yet). Complete all bonuses on all boards and you will have the option to build the space port. Each board has a set of bonuses that are activated by performing a specific task. From what I can tell, there must be a separate set of graphics for each screen resolution since the view fills the screen in all three. Each is fully rendered and all playable at 640x480, 800圆00, or 1024x768. Speaking of the views, they all are simply beautiful. This is a welcome change of pace and sets 3D Pinball apart from its competitors. It's not the standard overhead view presented by most pinball games but instead is from a tilted perspective. The view of the tables is approximately what it would be if you were playing an actual pinball game. Not at the same time, mind you, but all three are tied together so that at different points you can warp between the different tables. Yes, that's right, you can play on all of them. When you first begin you have the option of playing any one of the three or ALL of them. Game play occurs on three different tables. 3D Pinball is a fresh bread in a bakery full of stale crescent rolls. You're simply going to a theme park, and that makes it a little less exciting. There's a plenty of DOS and Windows based pinball games, so when it came time to review 3D Pinball I was a bit apprehensive. You are no longer preparing for battle in a Space Colony, surviving through a Creep Night in a haunted castle or escaping a pre-historic Lost Continent. In my mind, however, it doesn't have the same fantastical imagination that was the series calling card in its early days. It's actually a very fun setup and with improved ball physics, it's perhaps the best playing in the series. Catch the Virtual Coaster or Canyon River Rapids (now removed from the park, unfortunately) and you'll be whisked to their own dedicated table. ![]() Most require you to simply hit things, such as the Fender Bender bumper cars or the Kissing Tower (not recommended for actual kissing). Ride all of them without dropping a ball and the Fun Zone will open up.ĭepending on what icon is highlighted, the Fun Zone will present its own rides and special tasks to complete for even more points. Wildcat (a Great Coasters International wooden coaster) and Coal Cracker (an Arrow Developments log flume) both give opportunities for multi-balls while the Ferris Wheel, Corkscrew Loop and Wave Swinger can garner even more opportunities for a higher score. Aim your ball towards the track to earn more points.Īs well as these, five of the park's most iconic rides are present at all times. As well as Lightning Racer, there is the B&M Inverted Coaster called The Great Bear, the Vekoma Boomerang named Sidewinder, the Schwarzkopf Steel Coaster known as SooperDooperLooper, and Tidal Force, a water ride by Hopkins Rides. On the left of the table is the Thrill Zone, a side table of sorts that will feature an ever-changing rota of coasters. ![]() ![]() This ride, and a number of others, are in the actual game too. Sierra and Dynamix partnered with the American chocolate company's Pennsylvanian holiday destination who were promoting their new duelling wooden coaster by Great Coasters International called Lightning Racer. Here, the table is based on that of a theme park. Like NASCAR, the setting is less fantastical. This would be the fifth and final game in the over-the-top franchise, so the better go out with a bang. After the disappointment of Dynamix's 3D Ultra NASCAR Pinball, hopes were high that they'd get back on form with their theme park-themed entry from 2000 3D Ultra Pinball: Thrillride.
